Definition Chemistry

Definition ChemistryWhen it comes to working with chemical compounds, cation definition is an important part of working with the scientific community. Just as the name suggests, cation definition is used to define a substance by applying an electrical charge on it. A cation is an ion that has an electric charge. The thing about the cation is that it is the point of transfer of ions in the system. In the case of a chemical compound, it is the place where the compound is stored as it is being formed. As such, the cation needs to be defined in order to determine its composition.During definition chemistry, a liquid or gas undergoes a chemical reaction in which an atom or molecule is transferred from one compound to another. When this occurs, it can either be a single molecule or multiple molecules depending on how the process is done.Although the cation is the main component of the process, the process can also involve other components. The presence of some compound makes a cation more l ikely to be formed, which creates a good potential for it to combine with another substance. The tendency to combine with other compounds can lead to the formation of a new compound.Definition is defined by methods such as freeze drying and exfoliation. The process of freeze drying uses large amounts of heat to force the crystals out of the material, while exfoliation removes unwanted deposits from the surface of the crystals using pressure. The techniques are used in order to remove impurities, leaving the good minerals behind.Definitions are sometimes further broken down by style of work. One example is defining the composition of a laboratory test by determining the substances that are in the test sample through analysis.Definition is a process in which the human brain calculates the composition of a substance based on its appearance. By doing this, they are able to give different names to chemicals based on the end product of their process.

How To Improve Your Guitar Tone Without Buying New Gear

How To Improve Your Guitar Tone Without Buying New Gear Suzy S. Want better guitar tone without spending hundreds of dollars on new gear? Guitar teacher Ben M. shares how you can use the settings already on your electric guitar to drastically improve your sound When it comes to the electric guitar, players can be relentlessly dedicated to achieving the perfect guitar tone. Guitar tone (also called guitar sound) is most simply defined as the sound your guitar produces. Guitar tone can be compared to a painting; it is a masterpiece that results from blending different colors together. In this case your colors are bass, treble, mids, your amplifier, and any effects a guitarist may use. Guitarists pride themselves on their tone because it is what sets them apart as an artist and gives them their own unique sound. But don’t be fooled by this brief definition, guitar players can spend countless hours, days, and even weeks carefully sculpting their ideal tone. However, the good news is that guitar tone is in fact 100% personal and every player, no matter how experienced, has the ability to dial in great guitar tone without spending a fortune on fancy gear (though it is important to have the essentials). This article focuses on simple ways to improve your tone by simply using  all the built-in features your electric guitar already has. First Steps  to Improve Your Guitar Tone When beginning to work on improving your tone it is important to ask yourself a few basic questions: What aspects of my current tone do I like? What aspects do I dislike? (too dark, too bright, etc) Based on my playing style and genre, what aspects of my playing do I want to highlight in my tone (for example: sparkling chords, thick power chords, or clear solo bends) After analyzing what you’ve discovered, set a goal. Maybe you are trying to imitate your favorite guitar idol’s tone or want to focus on creating your own sound. Regardless of what your goal is, an important thing to keep in mind (especially for beginners) is to always start with what you have. How to Use Your Guitar Tone Settings While many players may rush to their local music store and walk out with a handful of effects pedals or even a new amp, most players tend to forget one of the most basic aspects of their guitar’s anatomy; the pickup selector switch and the tone and volume control knobs. Below is a quick breakdown of an electric guitar’s tone settings: Pickup Selector Switch Selects which pickup is active on your guitar. Most guitars have three  switch positions; some guitars like Fender Stratocasters have five. Bridge Pickup (farthest down): bright, sparkling sound, lots of treble Middle Position: warm and shimmery sound, high mids Neck Pickup (farthest up): full and rounded sound, more bass Volume Control Controls the master volume of your guitar, or the amount of signal that will come out of your amplifier. Tone Control Controls the brightness or darkness of your guitar’s sound by adding or reducing the amount of bass/treble in the signal. Bass = darker tone with lots of low end. Treble = brighter tone with lots of high end and sparkle. How to Adjust Your Guitar Knobs for Better Guitar Tone Now that we have established the basics, let’s focus on learning how to use the guitar  knobs. Players of all levels continue to leave their controls dialed up to 10 all the time, restricting them from loads of undiscovered tone possibilities. To make a comparison, that’s like buying a sports car and only driving it only in first gear. A simple concept that can really help develop a guitar player’s control over their tone is getting into the habit of setting your tones with the volume and tone controls below their maximum levels. When you dial in your tone with the knobs at 10, you have limited adjustment options. Only being able to turn down the knobs will typically make your sound muddy. By giving the controls room to expand, you have an array of possibilities if your tone needs adjusting. Below are common ways to use your guitar controls and bring up your guitar playing IQ. Guitar  Knob Techniques Basic Boost: The volume knob can act as a boost which can take your guitar from clean sounds for rhythm playing to dirty overdrive tones for soloing. When playing a song keep your volume knob at 6 or 7 when playing chords or verse parts and when it’s time to deliver a rockin’ solo roll up the volume to 10 and you will not only hear a boost of gain (overdrive) but also a volume lift over any other instruments in the song. Signal Clean Up: Perhaps your tone is too distorted and you want to reduce the harshness and clean up the signal without changing your amp/effects settings. Simply roll off the volume knob on your guitar a bit and the signal will clean up rather effectively. Buzz Killer: How many players have cringed at the level of buzz coming out of your amp? Guitar buzz is commonly caused by poor grounding in your guitar’s electronics and usually requires repairing. But as a quick fix, turning down the volume knob until the hum is quelled can make your guitar sound more pleasing to the ear. Set Polisher: If you are in a band, always turn the volume knob down while on stage in between songs to avoid buzz. This makes your set seem much more polished and professional. Volume Sweller: A more advanced technique with the volume knob is called swelling. Play a chord or note with the volume knob off and gently roll it back (many players use their pinky on the side of the knob) to let the sound pass through again. Experiment rolling up the knob fast or slow and see what happens. This takes practice but can produce awesome sounds when used while playing. Guitar Tone Control Techniques Tone Warmer: Keeping the tone knob around 9 or 10 is best for warm tones like Led Zeppelin or Jimi Hendrix type sounds. This means the guitar signal has lots of treble making the high ends of the signal sparkle. Tone Darkening: Roll back the tone knob for darker sounding tones like Sunshine of Your Love by Cream or the wholesome solo tone from American Woman by The Guess Who. This setting brings out the bass or low end in the signal. Onboard Wah-Wah: A more advanced tip with tone control is using the tone knob as an onboard wah-wah effect. In essence a wah-wah pedal is just a giant tone control adding treble when pressed down and adding bass when pulled back. You can emulate this effect by playing a chord or note and twisting the tone control rapidly, or slowly, from its maximum level to minimum level (much like volume swelling.) This requires practice and technique but you can get great wah-wah sounds without buying the pedal itself. After reading this article, hopefully you can understand why improving your guitar tone is vital to developing as a player and that there are endless sonic possibilities at your disposal already. Experiment with some of the techniques from this article and find what kind of sounds are most pleasing to your ear. Mastering a guitar’s controls, like playing the guitar itself, takes time so be persistent. Having a solid understanding of the most basic tone tools will not only boost your guitar playing IQ, but also push you in the direction of guitar tone paradise. What is Timbre in Music and the Voice Why is it Important

What is Timbre in Music and the Voice Why is it Important Sign up successful What is Timbre? Understanding timbre in music is important for all musicians, especially singers, when you want to produce a different tone or quality in a piece of music. Different timbres are described using words like brassy, breathy, round, full, or bright. You can use different types of vocal timbre to create a sound that gives the right “feel” or emotion to your music. It’s not just about playing or singing with feeling. You should know how a tone is utilized to achieve that emotion. The sound waves produced when someone sings a note are different for each individual person because there are multiple factors that go into the production of a sound, such as breath. The timbre of a sound depends heavily on its waveform, which varies with the number of overtones (AKA “harmonics”) that are present, their frequencies, and their relative intensities. The illustration below shows several unique waveforms, to give you an idea of what this looks like. Timbre in Music Musicians create varying timbres, based on both their instrument and the number of frequencies the instrument emits. Each note from a musical instrument is a complex wave containing more than one frequency. The video below examines the timbre of several different instruments and explains how the way that you play an instrument affects its timbre.   One example of timbre in music is known as “attack and decay.” When someone plucks a guitar string or strikes a piano key, the sound is hit forcefully; it’s loud and then sort of dies away. This explains how the same note can have a different timbre when played differently by another musician. Factors that Affect Timbre So, what factors affect timbre in music? There are multiple, depending on the instrument. For example, the way someone pushes air through an oboe will contribute to the sound frequencies that are emitted and the way it is heard, giving it a distinguished timbre. Things like forced air, breath control, posture, and so on are all factors that affect timbre. Small differences in the frequencies are also a factor how many you can hear, their relationship to the pitch, and how loud they are. The shape of an instrument and the envelope of an instrument’s sound both affect its timbre. Check out the video below to see the differences within sound waves when playing the same note from instrument to instrument.     Timbre in the Voice When singing, your timbre is affected by either constricting or opening different parts of the vocal tract, like the tongue and throat. Posture and breath control also play a role. Most singers are familiar with their voice type whether it’s soprano, alto, tenor, or bass and these classifications are related to timbre as well. Understanding which sound waves are high, low, and mid-level can help you identify your voice type. Your speaking voice even has its own timbre. The unique soundwaves you create when speaking are what allow you to be recognized by others. Common examples of timbre in the voice are sounds that are piercing, resonant, light, flat, mellow, dark, or warm. One example is Celine Dion. Her voice is often categorized as “silky,” whereas someone like Ella Fitzgerald has more of a “smoky” timbre. Vibrato is another way to identify timbre in a singing voice. It provides color to a lengthy note that is held, changing its frequency and tone. Improving Your Sound Now that you understand the implications of timbre, how can you apply them to your own music? One of the best ways to improve upon your timbre as a singer is to work with a vocal coach someone who has a deep understanding of timbre and its use. A voice teacher can work exclusively with you to help you identify your distinct quality and tone. They’ll also show you how to adjust it to get the sound and pitch you desire, especially when working on a particular song that requires a specific emotion or feeling. Because there is no one else like you in the world, learn to appreciate and take pride in your unique timbre. Whether you’re a singer or musician, your timbre sets you apart and helps distinguish you from other artists! Need Private Lessons? Search thousands of teachers for local and live, online lessons. FAQs about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

FAQs about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) If you are the parent of a high school student, college is likely on your mindand so is how to pay for it. Many parents are not as informed as they could be about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), says CEO and Co-Founder, Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Centers. Most families understand that the FAFSA gives them access to federal student aid in the form of federal grants, work-study and loans, but the financial aid process can still be quite overwhelming, says Huntington. She answers some of the most frequently asked questions about federal aid: What are the requirements to receive financial aid? Students must hold a high school diploma or General Education Development certificate and be enrolled in an eligible program as a regular student seeking a degree or certificate, maintaining satisfactory academic progress. They must be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen with a Social Security Number, not be in default on any federal student loans, not have any convictions for the possession or sale of illegal drugs, and register with the Selective Service System if a male and not currently on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces (more details on all of this at https://fafsa.ed.gov). What do students need to complete the FAFSA? A Social Security Number or Alien Registration Number, federal income tax returns, W-2s, and records of taxed or untaxed income, bank and investment records, and an FSA ID, which parents and students can create at https://fsaid.ed.gov. Do students need to wait until their/their parents taxes are filed to complete the FAFSA? No. For the 2018-2019 school year, students will report their 2016 income information (not 2017). What are the federal student aid deadlines? The FAFSA for the 2018-2019 school year was available on October 1, 2017 and students/parents can apply between then and June 30, 2019 for aid for the 2018-2019 school year. For the 2019-2020 school year, students/parents can apply between October 1, 2018 and June 30, 2020. Are state student aid and college aid deadlines different? Yes, they might be. Check online at https://fafsa.ed.gov/deadlines.htm. In New Jersey, for example, the fall and spring term state aid deadline is September 15, 2018. Each college might have its own financial aid deadline, so students need to contact the colleges theyre interested in attending to find out for sure. Do students need to wait until they are accepted to a college before completing the FAFSA? No. They do have to list at least one college that will receive their FAFSA information, but students can list all schools they are interested ineven if they havent applied or been accepted yet. If they submit the FAFSA and later consider a school that they did not list previously, they can submit a correction to the FAFSA online. Are grades taken into consideration when financial aid is awarded? No. If students want to continue receiving federal student aid, however, they must maintain satisfactory academic progress. This essentially means they must meet a minimum grade-point average and complete a certain number of credits each year. Each school has its own policy, so its a good idea to check with them. What happens after a student submits the FAFSA? The U.S. Department of Education processes the application within 3-10 days, depending on whether the student applied online or not. Then they will receive a copy of a Student Aid Report (SAR), which summarizes the information provided on the FAFSA and includes an Expected Family Contribution. Colleges use this figure to assess eligibility for other federal and nonfederal student aid and creating students award packages (and distributing that aid). These are some of the most common questions about financial aid, but Huntington encourages parents and students to visit the Federal Student Aid website for more information about the FAFSA and federal aid for students: https://fafsa.ed.gov. Care for Kids Taking ADHD Medication

Care for Kids Taking ADHD Medication A recently issued federal report found that 500,000 children who were treated with ADHD medication did not receive appropriate follow-up care per the recommendations outlined by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Specifically, these children did not attend a follow-up doctors appointment within one month of starting their medication and 1 in 5 children did not attend additional follow-up appointments within one year as recommended. While this report focused on children enrolled in Medicaid, the follow-up care likely reflects typical care for most children who receive their medication from pediatricians or other primary care practitioners. The report did not identify the reasons why follow-up care was poor for so many children, but the findings do highlight the need for parents to advocate for their children. As a parent, what type of follow-up care should you expect for your child after they start an ADHD medication? The American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines include four key points related to ADHD treatment: When medication is prescribed, a follow-up appointment to check on medication effectiveness and side effects should occur within one month. At a minimum, two additional follow-up appointments should occur within one year. For optimal treatment effects, behavior therapy should be provided in addition to medication. For preschoolers, behavior therapy should be used first, and medication should only be added if necessary. ADHD should be treated as a chronic condition, and providers should follow a chronic care model of treatment, like models used in other chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes. Therefore, treatment should continue beyond one year and medication adjustments should be made as symptoms change over time. In addition to following these guidelines, parents should expect to complete symptom rating scales at follow-up visits. Ideally, teacher rating scales should be collected as well. The provider should review these completed rating scales at each visit and consider the responses when determining whether a medication adjustment is needed. Follow-up care is particularly important for kids with ADHD because every child responds to ADHD medication differently. Some have a great response to the first medication they try. Others need to try two or three medications before finding one that works well. Medication dose also needs to be adjusted somewhat regularly, both when a medication is initially started and as a child grows and gains weight over time. Lastly, ADHD medications can cause side effects, many of which can be addressed with medication adjustments. Unfortunately, as the recent federal report highlights, not all practitioners adhere to the recommended ADHD treatment guidelines. Parents should feel confident asking for regular follow-up visits and to have access to ratings scales that can be completed by parents and teachers. ADHD medication can be a very powerful treatment tool, and its important to work with a provider who will provide follow-up care that optimizes medication response in order to help your child reach their full potential. Irvine College Tutor Tips So Youve Made Your College Choice

Irvine College Tutor Tips So Youve Made Your College Choice Tips From an Irvine College Tutor: So Youve Made Your College Choice? Now What? Tips From an Irvine College Tutor: So Youve Made Your College Choice? Now What? On May 1st high school seniors made a commitment to a college or university. Except students who were wait-listed, pretty much everybody knows where they will be attending school next year. All of that hard work, standardized testing, advanced placement classes, and tutoring hours have finally paid off. So what should students focus on? Do they need to get started thinking about college right away or should they simply concentrate on graduating high school? What should they do over the summer? There are a lot of questions students, and their families have about the best way to prep for college after making a decision. These are a few of the most important things high school seniors can do once they have done their final choice. 1. Pick freshman classes if necessary Some universities will give the incoming freshman the opportunity to choose their first-year courses right away. In some cases, students can choose from a few different packages of approved courses for their major while in other circumstances they can just pick four general ed classes to get started. Its important for incoming freshman to find out how many classes will make them an official full-time student. Four or five classes are considered full-time; however there are always some exceptions when it comes to late start classes or prerequisites. If a student needs to take prerequisites, they should make sure theyre taking these in their first semester so they can move forward. Also, its recommended that new college students take at least one or two classes in a subject they will actually enjoy. This will make the academic transition run more smoothly and provide an overall more enjoyable experience (READ: 4 Differences Between High School and College). 2. Arrange an appointment with an academic counselor Its essential for students to make an appointment to meet with an academic counselor on a regular basis. There are so many important details that incoming freshman will not know about, and they will also be distracted by the many things they need to do to adjust to living on campus and meeting a whole new set of friends and classmates. Academic counselors provide a fantastic amount of one-on-one information that can help students graduate on time and be successful through any difficult or stressful circumstances that may occur. 3. Verify what conditions the acceptance carries Most college acceptance letters are conditional. This means that seniors in high school will have to do some things to maintain their admissions. For the most part, this means either simply passing all of their second-semester courses and graduating on time or maintaining a specific GPA. Some schools might have additional requirements especially if the student is on scholarship or receiving financial aid. 4. Get to know potential roommates Students will spend plenty of time in their dorm room once they move on campus. Having a great roommate can make a difference in a college freshman’s social life. Its a good idea to get to know potential roommates and pick out a person who will share a similar schedule and lifestyle. Its also better for students to meet with these potential roommates if possible just to get a feeling if its somebody they could live with for a year (READ: 5 Things to do Before Your go to College). 5. Get comfortable with the campus In many cases, students will be traveling relatively far away from home thus it may be difficult to spend too much time on campus over the summer. However, students who live within a reasonable driving distance from their college should consider spending a little bit of time on campus. Its important to get to know where all of the good places are to get food, study, and just hang out. The campus will be a student’s home outside of the classroom for the next four years. It can be incredibly overwhelming to get onto campus the very first day and be searching for four different lecture halls. Spend some time wandering around in advance to get comfortable.
